Do We Go To Law School...And Stop Being Ourselves?
Publius Jones, III |
Friday, November 11, 2011 Who were we before we came to law school? We had hopes, interests, dreams, wants, and wishes before we came to this place. What were they again? Where did they go?
Life in law school is not living listlessly, but rather it’s a mad dash toward manifold goals and a constant struggle to juggle the competing interests on our time.
How many times has this happened to you: you’re with a group of people and you end up talking about class, about grades, or about jobs? We gravitate our conversations towards these topics without realizing sometimes that (1) there’s a larger world out there and class & finals are but a small part of it and (2) we’re in danger of forgetting who we are and why we’re here in the first place.
Law school gives you plenty of opportunities to feel small. Take a step back and get some perspective. You’re here for a reason. You mean something to someone. You are a reasonably intelligent person. Holding on to who we are and why we’re here can help us 1L’s get the most out of the law school experience. Let’s do this thing, together.
