Steroids should have little bearing on shot at Hall

It was 1994. Tony Gwynn was chasing .400. Matt Williams and Ken Griffey Jr. were chasing 61 homeruns. Frank Thomas was putting up one of the greatest seasons ever behind the plate. Greg Maddux was having one of the greatest seasons ever from the mound.

Top coaching masterminds set to meet in Final Four

So much for your friendly neighborhood Law Weekly prognosticator: after going three-for-eight in a positively brutal Sweet Sixteen, all four of my Motown darlings were eliminated by the conclusion of the weekend.

WBC overhaul should start with team USA pitching

On Sunday, the United States team lost to the Japanese team in the World Baseball Classic. There have been two World Baseball Classics, and neither saw the U.S. take home the crown.

D.C. United suffers frustrating draw in first match

D.C. United opened their 2009 MLS campaign Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles with a 2-2 draw with the Beckham-less Galaxy. A Christian Gomez penalty and a wonderstrike from rookie Chris Pontius in his MLS debut put the Black-and-Red up 2-0 midway through the second half, but a crazy ending ensured that the Capital Club would not return to the East Coast with the full three points.

The World Baseball Classic needs a total overhaul

For those of you who didn't know this, the World Baseball Classic is reaching its epic conclusion as this paper goes to press on Monday, Mar. 23. Reigning champion Japan will be taking on its fierce rival, South Korea, in a battle to determine which nation is the world champion of baseball.

Historic Sweet Sixteen to feature top twelve teams

After going out on a limb and choosing enigmatic Clemson to make it to Motown in last week's issue, my decision fell flat on its face after Michigan held off a furious last-ditch rally to upset the Tigers in the first round. Terrence Oglesby had another depressing performance, chucking up terrible shots and committing a positively boneheaded intentional foul that ended up being the difference in the game. The coaching was subpar once again, letting the players turn in a lackadaisical effort for the first thirty minutes before playing up to their true capabilities in the final ten.

Bubble watch: Teams currently teetering on the brink

March is without a doubt one of the greatest months of the year, and not just because it begins with snowstorms out of freaking nowhere. No, March is a month of Madness, not least of which involves one giant bubble. As we go into tournament season, here’s a quick and dirty rundown of the teams who might be watching the CBS Selection Special not just for their seeds, but to see whether they’ll be dancing for a chance at the NCAA crown at all.

Will the Detroit Lions ever learn from their mistakes?

As a journalist and a law student, I guess I’m still at the stage of my life when I can harbor wild dreams about my future. One of those dreams puts me in the front office of a major professional sports team. While The Law Weekly continues to be generous enough to give me a soapbox, I'll continue acting like that dream has already come true.

D.C. United look to rebound from disappointing ‘08

The 2008 season for D.C. United soccer was, in a word, disappointing. A year after winning their second straight Supporters' Shield (awarded to the MLS regular season champions), United missed the playoffs. What made the season especially disappointing was the even higher-than-usual expectations the team generated at the outset of the year.

Does spring training matter? The numbers say no

After months of waiting, Major League Baseball is almost back. On Apr. 5, the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies will host the Atlanta Braves, kicking off the 2009 season. Until that date, spring training will be the only major league action, with the spring Grapefruit and Cactus leagues providing the games. Reviewing current standings, fans of the Angels, Braves, Cardinals, Dodgers, Pirates, and Royals are happy with their teams' dominance. Unfortunately, Phillies fans are facing a 5-9 record: perhaps a far cry from the great team of last year, but does spring training really predict anything about the regular season?
