Public Safety issues holiday security advice

Edward Piper, the Director of the Department of Public Safety at Georgetown Law, sent a crime prevention letter to the Law Center community in advance of the holidays.

“During the holidays,” Piper wrote, “the potential for thefts and robberies increase. More people are out and about, and they are carrying more gifts and money than during other times of the year. While there’s no need to be afraid, you should keep in mind the following holiday safety reminders:

Theft of equipment stuns Gilbert & Sullivan crew

Crucial equipment was stolen from G&S over the weekend.

UPDATE: Department of Public Safety Director Edward Piper today told the Law Weekly that the DPS is investigating the incident. Piper also said that it is possible that the D.C. police will eventually take over the investigation.

A brazen theft has created a new challenge for the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society, which just began the last weeks of rehearsal for its fall show. Over the weekend, important pieces of equipment were stolen from the group’s storage cage in the garage below McDonough Hall.

Law Center is no stranger to security scares

Fear of a gunman led police to lock down campus. Life at the Law Center returned to normal just a few hours after fears of an armed gunman sparked a campus lockdown.

The incident, which occurred almost exactly one year after D.C. police officers held a 1L Gewirz resident at gunpoint because of a campus gunman report, began midday on Friday, Sep. 30.

Breaking news: vandalism in Gewirz garage

Photo by Justin Waddell, 1L. Passenger-side window apparently broken with a fire extinguisher.The Department of Public Safety is investigating multiple acts of apparent vandalism that occurred in the Gewirz Hall parking garage early in the morning of April 2nd.

The Law Weekly was on the scene at 3:45 am. Sometime before then on the P1 level of the underground parking deck, someone apparently broke an emergency phone, removed a fire extinguisher from its wall-mounted glass case, and smashed the front passenger-side window of a Honda Accord.

Gunman scare puts campus police to the test

Law Center security has been put to the test in recent months, dealing with everything from petty theft to drug activity on 2nd Street to a false report of a campus gunman.

In an interview with the Law Weekly, Director of Public Safety Edward Piper reviewed his major methods for keeping the Georgetown community safe. He also shed some light on a recent flurry of security incidents, including the campus gunman scare, which ended with D.C. police holding a 1L resident of Gewirz Hall at gunpoint.
