Human Rights Action/Amnesty International: "Reducing Genocide to Law" Discussion & Reception

On Friday, November 2, 4:30 p.m., in Hotung 1000, the Georgetown Human Rights Action/Amnesty International will present “Reducing Genocide to Law: Reflections on Empathy and Global Justice with Dr. Payam Akhavan.” The discussion will be moderated by PRofessor Jane Stromseth.

Dr. Akhavan is one of the world’s foremost authorities on genocide prevention. He has advised on the prosecution of war criminals in the ICTY and ICFTR. He has served in the field with the UN. He has appeared as counsel and advocate before the ICJ, ICC, and ECHR, and as amicus curiae before the Supreme Court. In his most recent work, Dr. Akhavan examines the possible limitations of law as a tool to address moral outrages like genocide, which seemingly occur in spaces beyond human words and reason.

A reception will follow immediately after the event. For more information, and to RSVP, please email hra-ai@law.georgetown.edu.

New America Foundation/Future Tense: “My Brain Made Me Do It”

On Monday, October 22, the New America Foundation will host another session of their Future Tense program series, to discuss the following: “The cornerstone of our legal system is free will: Anyone who is not insane is accountable for crimes ranging from tax evasion to murder. But an emerging body of science is challenging that notion, using brain scans and genetic testing to suggest that some people may be born criminals. Does neuroscience really support the idea that some people can’t help but break the law? What happens if we can detect criminal propensity in toddlers? Should criminals diagnosed as psychopaths spend less time in prison because it’s not their fault, or additional time because they are more likely to act again? And what happens to our basic legal framework if almost any defendant can say, ‘My brain made me do it?’”
